They should.

It really sucks for athletes to devote their life to getting to the Olympics and then have it be in a place where they have to choose between their health and their lifelong dream.

It's a little overshadowed because of how terrible Rio is and shouldn't be hosting them. I'm still excited for them though.

She might be well known and I'm just out of it but I know there is a really hot Danish tennis player. I think she is their flag bearer.

Edit: Nevermind. I know who she is and she isn't amazing. She was in GQ or Esquire recently and looked real good. But I was also drunk when flipping through it.

Fair, I guess they don't have football to take away athletes. Seems like softball, basketball, track, etc would take some away though.

Major sports for males - Football, basketball, and baseball

Major sports for women - Basketball, softball, and soccer

We dominate all of these sports. Girls have less options of sports, so our athletes usually pick from these three.

Kyle
08-03-2016, 11:41 PM

Why are they so bad though? You would think these other countries that treat soccer as the most important sport would field a better team. Some of those countries might not fund women's sports as much, but you would think some do.

Zach
08-03-2016, 11:42 PM
Money wise womens sports are shit here. Brittney Griner went to China for like six weeks and made more than she did in a WNBA season by quite a bit. Also, you have to look at the girls too. If a girl is tall, she isnt going to do gymnastics, softball (unless youre Jennie Finch), and those things. Those girls got basketball and thats it.

If I had to guess I'd say it has to do with that with the scale of college sports in the US in combination with Title IX giving an opportunity and incentivizing a lot more athletes to compete at a high level. I don't know of any (and maybe there are some) other countries that have an amateur sporting system nearly the level of size/strength/competition as college sports in America, especially for women. I'd guess that the US women's soccer dominance is a combination the ability to cast the widest net to find the best talent and of course funding.

Why are they so bad though? You would think these other countries that treat soccer as the most important sport would field a better team. Some of those countries might not fund women's sports as much, but you would think some do.

Because the soccer countries don't care as much about their women's team as americans do theirs. Ditto most women's sports. Plus there's greater competition for coaches/trainers from male soccer players as most coaches/trainers of either gender want to work in men's football since that's where the money is. This isn't as true in the US.

The college system is part of why your men's team will never be as good at soccer as the top nations. The youth development systems in Germany, France, Spain, etc. are much more advanced and structured...for male soccer players.

It's an interesting debate. Bolt could go 9-9 with gold medals. That is something we may never see again. I'd still give it to Phelps since he has so many more medals and does more events. I also think his events, especially the 400 IM, are more grueling than a 10!second sprint, so the fact that he can be so dominante in so many events is a bit more impressive.

You are comparing different swimming styles and distances and when it's applied to running styles you lmao. Your argument makes no sense. Phelps did a bunch of heats at a bunch of distances and with different strokes.

You joked that there are a million swimming events but there are a million track events. Of course those distances require different skill sets. Of course hurdles require a different skill set. It applies to swimming as well.

What Phelps even attempted was rare, let alone be able to succeed while trying it Just because it's not been done in track and field doesn't mean it's not allowed. Just no one has been that awesome at it. I have no idea how it's vastly different.

You can't be being serious.

Phelps does a bunch of distances with different strokes because he can. There aren't "different running techniques" allowing Usain Bolt to dominate sprinting in different ways. You listed the 100m, 200, 400 and 800, four entirely different events (competed on a timetable that makes it impossible to do) and compared that to Phelps when only 2 of his 19 gold medals came in events that weren't 100m or 200m.

And there really aren't a million track events. Again, you can't be being serious if you're comparing that to the amount of swimming events. You listed every short-middle distance track event and only ended up with 8 lol. 9 if you want to count the 1500m. Bolt would've had to win literally every running event below 3000m to get more medals than Phelps did in 2008. You must be joking.

We have Ledecky now for that.

Ledecky is so awesome. 9 world championship golds compared to Bolt's 11, in half the meets and is only 19. #betterthanbolt #amidoingthisright

Seriously, she is awesome, though.

Right. Which is my point. Don't determine who the best Olympian ever is based on how many medals they have. I'm not diminishing anything Phelps has done. He's incredible. I don't even have a strong opinion on Bolt vs Phelps, my initial comment was just some light trolling. I'm arguing against JJB's awful logic.

Apparently the only way Bolt > Phelps would be if he won the 100m/800m on the same night as well as the 400m/1500m and 200m/400mH on the same nights.

The funny thing in a Phelps vs. Bolt debate is this:

Bolt has 6 gold medals, the 100, 200, and 4x100 twice each.

Phelps also has 6 gold medals, in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, and 4x100 medley twice each.

Bolt also has 11 world golds in the 200, 4x100, and 4x200 thrice each, plus the 100 twice.

Phelps has 12 world golds in the 100 butterfly, 200 butterfly, 4x100 medley, and the 4x200 medley thrice each.

Bolt owns the world records in the 100 and 200. Phelps owns the world records in the 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly.

So you can argue whose better, but the difference is this is just comparing similar events. Even if you discount over half Phelps' accomplishments, he's still accomplished every single thing Bolt has in his entire career.

Saying the best butterfly swimmer in the world is equal to the fast sprinter in the world is nonsensical. It's the same reason the best badminton player of all time doesn't equal Lionel Messi or Tiger Woods. It's why no one is saying Ben Ainslie (4 consecutive gold medals in sailing from 2000-2012) is one of the greatest Olympians of all time. A world record in the 200m butterfly =/= being the fastest human of all time; comparing the two event for event is completely useless. If Michael Phelps only had 4 100m/200m Butterfly and 2 Relay gold medals in *two* Olympic games (the other piece of context you overlooked) it wouldn't even be a discussion. Phelps' longevity and domination over multiple events is the reason he's in the conversation.

Yes. It's not a hard concept to grasp. The best WNBA player isn't equal to Serena Williams. The random Chinese guy that won the 20k walk didn't pull off a feat just as great as Bolt's 100m victory. That's what you're saying.

I never did either one in an official capacity but my buddies in HS and I would "compete" against each other on our track doing 100m sprints and also in the pool doing 100m freestyle for conditioning. Not really. If you think about the number of women tennis players compared to women american football players, for example, it's pretty objective to assume that the best female tennis player > the best female american football player. Bolt vs Phelps is a smaller scale of that, obviously. But enough that I don't think you can genuinely argue that a 100m Butterfly gold medal = a 100m athletics gold medal. Yeah, it's pretty clear that SP has no respect for swimming nor in how difficult it is to master the different strokes and distances. Then when pointing out the many variations of distances and techniques for running, he calls it a false comparison. It makes no sense.

If swimming freestyle vs butterfly isn't very different, I would say running vs hurdling isn't very different either.

The whole point of how great phelps is is that he has mastered different areas of expertise at the same time.

And those different areas of expertise are there for Bolt to attempt to master in addition to his other races that he is a legend at.

SP is claiming running is harder than swimming? Literally every one of us could go out and run the 100 or 200. Would it be as fast as Bolt? Not even close. But I doubt we could all go out and do a 200 butterfly. Most wouldn't even be able to get the strike and the kick right. And those of us who could finish, I have a feeling we would be a lot closer to Bolt than we would Phelps in terms of time.

Bolt very well might win his three events in three straight Olympics. Phelps won the 100m butterfly, 200 m medley, and 4x100 medely in three consecutive Olympics. So he equaled Bolt. He has also won 10 golds on top of those. There is no argument whatsoever really about who is greater unless you don't respect swimming.

We are comparing two pretty pure sports. One involves moving from point a to b on land. The other involves moving from point a to point b on water.

There are variations in both running and swimming that involve different distances and different sometimes completely different styles, which means a whole bunch of different training and skill sets.

This whole time with comparing the two, you are complaining that Bolt doesn't have as many events to choose from as Phelps and it's pure and utter bullshit. If Phelps maxed out his strokes, you are correct. But neither comes anywhere close to maxing out the swimming or track and field events available to them.

Cognitive dissonance is a bitch.

However, Bolt going 333 (and for the record I don't think he will) definitely has the potential to be just as much the pinnacle of dominance in his own discipline as Phelps' dominance in his discipline. Both would be completely unprecedented feats that will likely never be matched again. Everyone getting so upset about me saying that is hilarious.

Yeah, I'm with this guy. I don't see how it's not comparable. Doing more events is exactly what difference between the two is. The events that they both do are exhausting and require immense amounts of physical talent and training.

I can't seem to get into Olympic basketball. The complete lack of competition really takes away any enjoyment. Also, getting 2 points for a win and 1 point for a loss is dumb. A point system isn't needed in sports without ties.

To put Bolt into context, since 1928 only him and Carl Lewis have managed to get more than 4 Gold Medals in Athletics. 12 swimmers have done the same. 9 sprinting Gold medals would be INSANE. Like, potentially just as insane as a swimmer being able to get 19 Gold Medals. Because amassing multiple Gold Medals in swimming is easier than it is in athletics (because they have more events, over closer distances and favourable timetable that require you be less of a specialist). It's not even debatable, but somehow "well why doesn't Bolt just compete in the 20k walk, 3000m steeplechase, 200m and 400m hurdles on the same day lulz?" is an actual argument here. I'm losing brain cells just trying to think about what you're saying.

If you are going to make an argument, you better be right. Paavo Nurmi has 9 Gold Medals in Athletics. He also has 3 Silver medals. Ray Ewry has 8 Gold Medals. Ville Ritola has 5 Gold Medals. Even if Bolt wins 3 gold medals this year, he won't be the most decorated track and field Olympian ever. He wouldn't even be second. Carl Lewis has 10 medals.

Meanwhile, Phelps has 19 Gold Medals, which only he has managed since ever. That is more than twice as many Gold Medals as anybody else has won. If Bolt wins all three event this year, he'll simply tie Paavo Nurmi for most athletic Gold Medals. I'll take the guy is twice as decorated over the guy who finished in a tie with some Finnish guy.

His mom started chatting with me while waiting for a table at a restaurant one time. Took me a minute or two to realize who she was. She kept on saying Michael gets this dish here and I had no idea who she was talking about at first. And then it hit me who Michael was. Then he came over and grabbed her cause they were sitting. He had a hoodie pulled up to obviously not draw attention to himself.

"Since 1928". Compared to 8 swimmers that have got 5+ over just the last two decades. And yes, Carl Lewis is absolutely in the conversation for GOAT Olympian. But simply as a sprinter Bolt would be arguably just as far ahead as everyone else as Phelps is in swimming (if he went 9-9). These really aren't complex points lol, I don't know why everyone is finding it so impossible to comprehend. How dominant you are compared to history/relative dominance is pretty much how we determine greatness. If 9 sprinting Golds in 3 Olympics is just as unprecedented as 19 Gold Medals in swimming, it's not a push to suggest they are equal achievements. But "'Murica!", I guess.

How about we stfu and enjoy both of their achievements. SP is Jamaican, you guys are all American...probably ain't going to change either side's opinion.

I'm not even saying Bolt > Phelps, or even Bolt = Phelps. Just stating that it could potentially be close. But everyone is in their feelings so they're reacting like I said Phelps is a useless piece of crap.

Tbf...she got silver because she landed on her ass. Her vault was so much more difficult than everyone else's that even with such a major fuck up she came in 2nd. The only way Maroney was not getting gold was by her doing what she did. Had she stuck it, no one would have come close to touching her.
