Haven't had a chance to check out the Jets' two second-round picks but I'm loving the rest of their draft. Very good job.

Care to explain why? Not being snarky, genuinely curious.

They need pass rushing dearly and their interior line play left a lot to be desired.

Their safeties are pretty average, and I think Watts can be a really good player

To be honest, I'm just not as high on Landry as most. I know it's a popular selection for us in mock drafts right now, but I'm just not feeling it.

There's about a dozen guys I would have preferred to Landry.

Love the Smith pick in Round 2. I think he'd fit perfect in Tennessee and I would love to pair him with Lewan and Conklin on the line. Some may think it's a little high but I think that's great value.

I'm not high on Armani Watts and factor in we have All-Pro Kevin Byard, along with Johnathan Cyprien (Big contract) and still currently have Da'Norris Searcy
under contract, I don't see safety as a need and don't see the player as a value pick to neutralize the need.

Understandable with Landry, it's personal preference. He was my top rated EDGE on the board. Glad you like Smith, I think he'd be great for you guys.

I like Watts a fair amount. Cyprien wasn't so great last year and Searcy is getting up there in age. Just my rationale, but I like hearing the POV from people who follow the team, makes this random thing more fun

Yeah I understand with Landry, manypeople are higher on him tan I am and it's a popular pick for us.

It's tough to say right now before FA just because we could cut Searcy, but I would have liked to have seen an ILB like Josey Jewell or a one of the DL that had value at that pick.

Considered Falk with my last Atlanta pick. Certainly not a need, but would have been a cheap backup for a few years at least.

Good fit for Washington.

I'm having some nasty BJ Raji flashbacks with Vea.

Vea and an impact edge rusher would pretty much make the draft a win no matter what else happened with their other 10 picks.

Vea and trading back into the first to get Landry or Key to mirror Raji/Matthews in 2009 would have me dancing.

Fisch isn't doing too bad either. Chubb instead of Guice still stings and I wouldn't take McFadden until the 5th but everything else it's fine. Parker's a great pick.

Here's my scouting report on Scales:

LB Tegray Scales, Indiana

6’0” – 230 lbs.

Played in all twelve games as a freshman, rotating heavily into the defense. Started one of eleven games the following year and saw his production escalate, then spent the following two seasons as a full-time starter, earning All-American honors as a junior and first team all-conference honors as a senior. Two-time team captain and emotional leader of the defense. Can play in the middle or on the outside. Size is on the borderline of what’s acceptable for his position, so Combine measurements will be important. Has a very likable game with excellent athleticism and an excellent motor. Heat-seeking missile who diagnoses quickly and flies around the field; seemingly always around the ball. Loves to pin his ears back and play downhill; makes a ton of plays in the backfield. Very fast in a straight line, with impressive ability to plant and drive. Quickness and active hands allow him to play off of blocks better than is typical for a player with his size; willing to mix it up with opponents. However, gaudy tackling statistics are more a testament to his instincts and athleticism than to his tackling ability; lack of length limits his radius, and lets some ballcarriers slip through his grasp. Makes a lot of shoestring tackles. Run fits leave something to be desired at times. An every-down player who can do a little bit of everything on passing downs. Athleticism allows him to work in man or zone coverage; can carry running backs out of the backfield or even work against slot receivers. Exhibits fluid hips when covering opponents over the middle of the field in man coverage. Eagerness to come up and play the run can sometimes cause him to bite on play fakes. Probably not big enough to cover opposing inline tight ends. Effective pass-rusher who uses his explosiveness and hands to penetrate into the backfield; recorded thirteen sacks over the past two seasons. Closes very quickly when operating as a spy and given a clear path to the passer. Plays on special-teams units. Has a very appealing combination of instincts, athleticism, versatility, and intangibles which should allow him to play in sub packages and potentially as a base linebacker behind a four-man defensive line despite his lack of ideal size.

BeerBaron

Surprised it took so long for someone to draft Hercules. He was a bad Mata'afa in college. Kind of a weird projection to the NFL since he played less than ten snaps at defensive end last year but it's worth taking a chance on his production at this point. I wouldn't be surprised if he went in the 60-80 range in the real draft.

I'm not really sure to be honest, Tedy Bruschi was an undersized defensive tackle from the same conference and he ended up doing it, but in my opinion it would probably be a waste to ask Mata'afa to do something like that, just because his main strengths to me are his quickness off the snap and his active hands. The reason I think he's a difficult projection is because I question if he's really flexible enough to bend the edge. But although I'm skeptical of whether he can transition to linebacker, I agree with you that you might have to get creative with how to use him because his role in college probably isn't going to be what he's doing in the NFL. You'll probably see some teams ask him to do linebacker drills at his pro day or in private workouts just to try and figure out where they could possibly play him.

You could just line him up between the tackle and guard and have him shoot the gap all day. Whether he's technically a LB or DL, he may be a guy who has a "job" rather than a "position," if that makes sense.

I was gonna say run stunts from the OLB spot, but like you said, his quickness just lets him knife between guys to make the play. He looks like a defender who's at his best inside the tackle box, so the closer to the line the better.

Are you talking about Samuels? He’s not a true running back, kind of a RB/FB/TE/slot WR versatile hybrid weapon. I don’t know if NO has a need for that type of guy, but I wouldn’t complain about it because he’s a good football player and there are lots of ways he can help. I would love if the Packers could pick him up if he’s there in the 5th.

Just reading up on him, but it still doesn't make much sense. When we do two TE sets, one is mainly in for blocking, which from the reports are saying arent his strength (5'11 and 220ish as well). Yeah, he can catch out of the backfield, but we already have three RBs who can do that.

He seems like a solid prospect for the 5th, but on this team I don't really understand the fit.

Yeah, I’m not part of this draft so I can’t really explain the thought process of whoever took him. He’s a good football player though. Also, I would guess he’ll carry more weight in the NFL. I kind of envision him as a shorter Trey Burton, but that could be way off.

That’s a real solid draft for buffalo. White and Ward would be a filthy corner duo, and getting Allen and Rudolph as late as they did also pumps. One of them has to be at least better than Peterson. Real good values

Good value I feel on Kiser and Edmunds, they were at the top of my board when you got them.

I think it would have been good to find some o-line depth at some point though. Seems to be a need area for the Eagles. The early run on guards didn't help.

Houston's draft is now wrapped up. I wanted to go offensive line earlier but the value just wasn't there in my opinion.

3-68: CB Donte Jackson, LSU
3-80: SS DeShon Elliott, Texas
3-98: DE Jeff Holland, Auburn
4-103: WR Jaleel Scott, New Mexico State
6-177: DT BJ Hill, NC State

Jackson and Holland should end up going much higher than that, so good values there.

And yeah, the run on o-line in the 1st created this void which pulled up the next couple of tiers of prospects. A lot of o-line picks after that felt like reaches.

Bears draft

8 Chicago - LB Roquan Smith, Georgia
59 CB Carlton Davis, Auburn

BeerBaron

It's not bad. I don't think they'd go Smith IRL, and he's also a questionable fit in Fangio's scheme, but he's talented enough that I could see him developing into a Navarro Bowman type.

They're probably keeping Kyle Fuller on the transition tag, so it lessens the immediate need for a corner, but you still got a few.

As long as they find at least one sure starter at WR in free agency or trade, adding a few more in the middle-late rounds is ok.

Would have liked to see an o-lineman somewhere. As I've mentioned for a few others, the early run on OL pushed some of the middle and lower tier guys up, so I can't fault you much for that.

badger
03-07-2018, 02:33 PM
I think Jacobs is a great pick that late. The Badgers moved him around a lot (OLB->FB->ILB->OLB if I remember correctly) which had to have impacted his development, but he’s a freak athletically as the combine showed. Worst case scenario, he can be a versatile back up linebacker who could excel on every special teams unit.

BeerBaron
03-07-2018, 03:26 PM
I like Ford. There are maybe a half dozen teams in the league that run schemes where he could be a great undersized NT. I can't remember if it was the Shrine game or the Senior Bowl, but a quote on him was that he's like "dropping an anvil in the middle of the field".

Baltimore Draft is complete.

Assumed Pre-draft needs: WR, OLB, OT, Interior OL.

16 Baltimore - WR Calvin Ridley, Alabama (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/calvin-ridley)
- I like receivers that run good routes and can catch, he does both.

52 Baltimore - OT Brian O'Neill, Pitt (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/brian-oneill)
- Likely reach, but I love his athleticism and he seems to be continuously improving. Moves like an athletic TE.

83 Baltimore - LB Darius Leonard, SC St. (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/darius-leonard)
-Athletic and instinctual LB.

118 Baltimore - G Will Clapp, LSU (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/will-clapp)
-By far my worst pick. I like his versatility, but he has short arms and isn't athletic.

154 Baltimore - OT Desmond Harrison, West Georgia (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/desmond-harrison)
-This guy has the chance to be an absolutely elite tackle. Had serious off the field issues at UT to the point where he almost went to jail for a long time and never saw the field. If he is over that, watch out. Dude needs work on his skills, as he just relied on athleticism to beat everyone at the small school level.

190 Baltimore - WR Trey Quinn, SMU (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/trey-quinn)
-He has good hands and runs good routes. Excelled at a small school. Average athlete, average size, strong for a WR. Could be an NFL slot receiver.

215 Baltimore (COMP) - OL Greg Senat, Wagner (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/greg-senat)
-Very good small school prospect. He's quick, has long arms, and has decent explosion. Needs more body mass. Needs a lot of coaching as he is a basketball player first.

238 Baltimore - DE Tyquan Lewis, Ohio St. (https://www.mockdraftable.com/player/tyquan-lewis)
-No way this guy is making it to the 7th round. He started off really well at OSU, but he started to lose time to Joey Bosa, Sam Hubbard, Nick Bosa, and Jaylyn Holmes. Two of those are first round picks, Hubbard is a borderline first, and Holmes is likely a 3rd-4th rounder. Lewis will be a good rotation EDGE guy. Not a starter. Could also beef up and become an interior player.

Washington Draft:
1. Da’Ron Payne, DL, Alabama
- if I could do it over again I would’ve taken Vea, but re-uniting Payne with Allen isn’t bad

2. D.J. Moore WR, Maryland
- A nice speedy, RAC kind of received for Alex Smith to hit on all those dunk and dunks. Adding Moore with Crowder, Thompson, and Reed will make Smith feel at home in D.C.

4. Luke Falk, QB, Washington St.
- Great value, no real QB of the future on the roster. Needs work, but he can sit behind Smith and learn. Could get a shot for the starting job in a few years.

5. Duke Dawson, CB, Florida
- Primarily a slot corner. Kyle Fuller replacement. Should’ve addressed CB earlier and thought of taking Ward at 13.

6. Ade Aruna, DL, Tulane
- Didn’t know who to take and saw he had decent combine numbers for a man his size.

7. Damon Webb, DB, Ohio State
- Know the skins need safety help and Webb was one of the only names I still recongnized this late. Around round 6 I realized how thin my draft knowledge is this year.

7. Josh Adams, RB, Notre Dame
- Should compliment Chris Thompson and Samaje Perine well

It was painful in the middle, but we did rounds 6 and 7 in like two days, so I'll take that.

Decided not to do UDFA because I think we're all probably pretty burnt out, but here are the last couple of guys on my board:

DT Lowell Lotuleiei, Utah (Actually had him ahead of Hall, but I liked Hall's production and hate Lowell's reported laziness)
WR Deontay Burnett, USC
DL Andrew Brown, Virginia
CB Quenton Meeks, Stanford
RB Justin Jackson, Northwestern
WR Byron Pringle, Kansas State
CB Grant Haley, Penn St.

Grant Haley is a lot better at football than Christian Campbell. Haley has the makings of a very good nickel corner, he should get drafted.
