Hi friends. A few of us are starting to get the offseason hunger, so let's start of with a draft. Comment your team below, first come, first serve. We're pretty civil here, so co-gms are always an option. I'm gonna take the Giants.
Ground rules:
- Trades don't need to be approved, it's just the draft and we're all old enough to live with our choices in a fictional, online forum, mock draft
- Be around. Send big boards. Leave cell numbers with people. I'm not pretending like I'm Mr. responsible, but come later rounds, you'll be skipped pretty quick.
- No clock enforced for now, but that can be changed if you guys are buttheads.
I'm probably forgetting things but whatever. It's not our first rodeo. Tell all your friends.

Well, there are pretty much four blue chip/elite prospects that everyone agrees on (Nelson, Fitzpatrick, Chubb, Barkley) so there is a good chance the Bucs get whichever one of them falls. Three QBs in the top 6 seems likely.

I think our RB situation is going to be shaken up this offseason. As far as me valuing Michel, he’s the 2nd best back; I’d personally argue that he would be the #1 guy if he wasn’t splitting time with Chubb throughout his career. Don’t be surprised if you see his name blow up after the combine. Also, we made a huge mistake by passing up on Dalvin Cook last year.

Since we've hit a bit of a lull...
Takeaways from Round 1:
- The QBs aren't necessarily in the order I would have though, but the four who I think are likely going in the 1st round did all go. (Plus Jackson who is a wildcard in this.)
- Big run on guards in the middle of the round. I don't think Wynn and Hernandez go that high in reality. Could they sneak into the first round? Sure. Top 20? Unlikely.
- Biggest value: Denzel Ward, by a good 10-12 picks. Considered him at 9 to San Fran but I liked Jackson's measurables and higher ceiling better. Honorable mentions: Orlando Brown, who I've seen mocked as high as 12 to Cincy, and (though he wasn't a first rounder), Billy Price, who I think goes in the top 25.
- Biggest reach: A couple are close, but none are too egregious. It would be easy to say Goedert, but I'll give Matt the benefit of the doubt, as it seems like a very Patriots-like move. Wynn and Hernandez, like I mentioned before, also feel like slight need-reaches. Seattle seems to like drafting college tackles for all o-line spots, so I think Brown would have been a better value and team fit. Dallas probably should have gone with any number of defenders there. Also, I unfortunately have to admit that I don't love Bryant to Atlanta even though that as my own pick. Need and value simply did not match up with the hoss DTs (Vea and Payne) going well before, and the run on guards killing the value there as well. Bryant and Christian Kirk were the top names on my board for them, and I felt like Kirk was too much of a luxury pick (even though they could use a slot receiver).

Agreed on Ward and Price. Disagree on Brown.
Orlando Brown is a guy who'll have to win with technique and length, because his feet are a liability at either tackle spot. I'd argue that Wynn is a better OT than him as well even though he'll play inside. I'm not sure how high Wynn and Hernandez go but they're pretty safe picks and better talents than any of the OTs.
Taven Bryant is arguably the #2 DT. That's a great pick for ATL.
1st round best picks...
Chubb - Buccaneers
Vea - Packers
Davenport - Chargers
Ward & Allen - Bills
Bryant - Falcons
worst picks...
Harrison - Steelers
Andrews - Rams
McGlinchey - Bengals
Smith - Bears
Ronnie Harrisons stock depends on how well he tests but I'm betting he's somewhere between a 3rd-4th rounder.
Andrews stock is dropping. He's fast at his size but he's stiff and drops a lot of balls.
I'm not sure McGlinchey's a first rounder. I think he could sneak in at the bottom of the 1st but #12 is a massive reach imo.
Roquan Smith is a poor fit in the Bears scheme. You never want him taking on blockers. And ILB isn't as great a need as pass rusher and CB.
BeerBaron
02-23-2018, 04:25 PM
My issue with Bryant to the Falcons is the fit. They have a bigger need at the position for a big stuffer type. Bryant is likely to be better as a 3-4 end. Maybe he can play the Michael Bennett role in their defense, but he's coming in raw for that.
Ideally, I would have traded down, but I didn't want to hold up the draft waiting around for that.
Grizzlegom
02-23-2018, 04:41 PM
I was going to take one of the OGs for Minnesota but since they were all gone I took Brown figuring that moving him inside would help hide the knock you mentioned.

Penny is so good. I don't know that I've seen another RB who maximizes what the blocking gives him like that.

They need an RT and interior OL. He is very athletic and seems to be picking up blocking well. Dunno, he was high on several of my source boards. Those may be Garbo but I liked him as a 2nd rounder.

Yeah, he was probably one of the top OTs left at this point. Here's my report:
OT Brian O’Neill, Pittsburgh*
6’6” – 305 lbs.
Was a 235-pound tight end recruit out of high school, redshirting his first season at Pittsburgh. Transitioned to offensive tackle the following season, starting twelve of thirteen games played, eleven of which came at right tackle. Reprised his role as a starting right tackle over all thirteen games the following season, then transitioned to the blindside this past season, replacing 2017 sixth-round pick Adam Bisnowaty, starting all twelve games and being named a first team all-conference selection. Offers good height for a pro tackle and who has done a good job of adding additional bulk; length looks just adequate. Looks like a good fit for a zone blocking scheme. Was frequently asked to pull to the left and has the athleticism to get into space and lead the way for tosses and screens. Exhibits a good work rate to get downfield and successfully engage opponents at the second level. Good leg drive after initial contact. Able to attack the outside shoulder of a defender and seal them inside when blocking on angles. Good hand placement and grip strength to get inside and stick with opponents through the whistle. Flashes the ability to generate some push in the run game, but overall effectiveness is constrained by his lack of leverage, tending to play too high. Light on his feet and able to get pretty good depth to protect the edge against speed rushers in the passing game. At his best, is able to bend his knees and use his initial punch to disrupt opponents and prevent them from getting into his pads. Keeps his back straight and avoids overextending to reach opponents. However, as in the run game, tends to play a little bit high and narrow, and can be late with his hands, causing him to lose the leverage battle and be walked back into the pocket. Can lapse into catching opponents and trying to absorb their power, typically unsuccessfully. Has been a durable starter for three seasons in a major program, having spent time on both sides of the line of scrimmage, but is still a work in progress whose overall bend, leverage, and lower-body strength crop up as issues frequently enough to suggest that he will probably need some time before he’s ready to play at a high level in the NFL, but has starting traits.

Physically, yes. But Shazier had great instincts. Malik is not a natural linebacker.

I’m interested to see where DG goes Next for the giants. First two picks were perfect and almost no brainers (well, QB at 2. Mayfield is who I would’ve gone with but still)

I'm starting to believe the Giants could really pass on a QB and buy into Davis Webb. Shurmer has a habit of buying into guys already on his roster and Webb wasn't a terrible QB prospect.

Grizz told me to pick for Minny, and I was initially leaning Jackson there. Went JC Jackson instead for his size (they like long corners) and potential.

Glad to get Johnson in the 3rd for the 49ers. Depending on if they re-sign Carlos Hyde, I may have gotten the 49ers three immediate starters in the first three rounds.

I ended up drafting White because I think he's a good fit for New England's sub packages; their "spur" role is essentially the same as New England's "star" role. Patrick Chung played very well over 900 snaps in that role this past season, but he'll turn thirty-one in August and is entering the final year of his contract. Jordan Richards struggled over nearly 300 snaps this past year, so I think it makes sense to bring in someone to groom as a potential replacement in the future. Here are my notes on him:
DB Kyzir White, West Virginia
6’2” – 216 lbs.
Brother is former first-round pick Kevin White. Spent two seasons at Lackawanna College before transferring to the Mountaineers. Stepped into the starting lineup in his first year at West Virginia and reprised that role this past season, enjoying two highly-productive campaigns to close out his college career. Has plus size for a pro safety, with a thick build, especially in the lower body. Splits his snaps between lining up as a deep safety and, more often, playing as more of a big nickel (“Spur”) defender opposite opposing slot receivers. Pretty consistent cover man whose responsibilities tended to involve working in either man coverage against opposing slot receivers or in shallow zones. Has a controlled and technically-sound backpedal, if not a particularly quick one. Able to use his strength to get physical at the line of scrimmage. When working in man coverage against opposing receivers and tight ends, exhibits a conservative temperament, allowing some completions but keeping opponents in front of him to avoid giving up big plays down the field. Does a good job of keeping himself in position to limit yards after contact. Work in deep zones was a little bit more limited by virtue of his defensive role, but overall temperament and feel suggest that he should be able to handle cover-two responsibilities. Ball skills were difficult to evaluate based on the games reviewed but broke up nine career passes and intercepted three balls this past season. Not particularly fast but plays with good instincts and discipline, allowing him to end up around the ball often and rack up a lot of tackles. Navigates through traffic effectively. Does a good job of using his arms and hands to play off of blocks and flow to the ball; attacks opposing blockers with intensity. Able to funnel opposing ballcarriers back inside to his teammates. Explosive into contact to help set the tone, providing plenty of thump; however, could wrap up more consistently. Also has some experience lining up on the edge and rushing the passer; flashes a good closing burst to finish his rushes with sacks and hits on the quarterback. Requires some imagination to project to a deep coverage role and will need to time well to solidify his draft stock, but does what he does very well, offering teams a big, physical safety with good instincts, reliable tackling, and a responsible style of play. Those traits could eventually make him a starter at the pro level.

Here's my review of the first two days from New England's perspective:
New England has traded fourth-round picks in each of the past two seasons for tight ends. They sent one to Chicago in 2016 for Martellus Bennett, and one to Indianapolis the following year in order to bring in Dwayne Allen after Bennett hit free agency. Both of those tight ends played significant roles with the team: Bennett was on the field for 867 snaps in 2016 after Rob Gronkowski was lost for the season, and last year Dwayne Allen played 474 snaps as a blocking specialist, primarily in two-tight end sets. Given Gronkowski’s injury history and the fact that he’s currently considering retirement, addressing the position should be considered a relatively high priority, especially because neither Allen or Bennett, who was claimed off of waivers late in 2017, is expected back at their relatively high 2018 salaries. Being a big fan of Goedert, who offers solid size for the position, a wide catch radius, and the ability to line up inline and generate push in the run game, he was seen as a good value at the end of the first round who could either complement or replace Gronkowski depending on how things play out.
Addressing the secondary was another major focus of the offseason plan. It seems clear that after being benched in the Super Bowl, Malcolm Butler won’t be back next season, but what is less clear is how the team plans on replacing the snaps he took this past season, which led New England’s defense. Eric Rowe was tasked with replacing him in the Super Bowl, but had an uneven season over 260 snaps, and is entering a contract year in any case. It wouldn’t come as a surprise if the Patriots tried to add a veteran in free agency this season; Aqib Talib is considered a potential cap casualty in Denver and would be an ideal replacement for Butler given his past success in New England. However, without being able to delve into the free agent market, drafting a cornerback with the potential to play on the outside opposite Stephon Gilmore was a priority. Isaiah Oliver comes from a program which has produced quality cornerbacks and although he’s a little bit raw at the moment in terms of getting his head around and in terms of avoiding contact downfield, he has the size, length, athleticism, and ball skills to become a quality starter in the future. His character and intelligence make him a good fit in New England.
It’s possible that the Patriots could wait another year to add a safety, given that they have three effective safeties already on roster in Devin McCourty, Duron Harmon, and Patrick Chung, but because Chung will turn thirty-one in August and is entering a contract year, they may want to bring in a potential successor for him this offseason. Chung played over 900 snaps at the Star position, the position which replaces the Sam linebacker when the team uses sub package personnel. Its primary role is to cover opposing tight ends, but the Star is also required to play in the box, make drops into shorter zones, and occasionally match up against opposing running backs or wide receivers. It’s one of the most nuanced and demanding positions on the defense, and historically the Patriots have struggled to find players who can handle such complex responsibilities. They drafted Jordan Richards in the second round of the 2015 draft, but he missed six tackles over 273 snaps this past season and may be released in the offseason. Fortunately, Kyzir White plays the Spur position in West Virginia, their version of the Star position, and offers a desirable mix of of size, physicality, instincts, and leadership skills; getting him into the defense a year or two before he’d be called on to play significant snaps would increase the chances of making a smooth transition once Chung departs.
Finally, rather than waiting to see which defensive ends were available at the end of the third round, the decision was made to move down just over thirty spots, from the end of the third round into the fourth round, in order to acquire defensive end Brooks Reed from the Falcons. Because Jabaal Sheard and Chris Long signed elsewhere this past offseason and Rob Ninkovich retired from the team, the Patriots were forced to rely on rookie Deatrich Wise and journeymen Eric Lee and Cassius Marsh for a total of 1,090 snaps in 2017, and all three struggled. Instead of banking on Wise or 2017 third-round pick Derek Rivers to hold down the fort in 2018, it seemed more logical to acquire a veteran with a more proven track record to start opposite Trey Flowers. Reed is a solid run defender with some pass-rushing ability, so the hope is that he would be able to provide some of what the team was missing last year. Trading for him would also allow Lawrence Guy to take more snaps inside as a replacement for Alan Branch, whose role was reduced in 2017 and who is unlikely to be back next season. With Reed in the rotation, the Patriots could avoid relying too heavily on young, unproven players like Wise, Rivers, and Adam Butler.

Care to explain why? Not being snarky, genuinely curious.
They need pass rushing dearly and their interior line play left a lot to be desired.
Their safeties are pretty average, and I think Watts can be a really good player

Was hoping Jewell would make it to my next 49ers pick to be Reuben Foster dumbass insurance.
I also think there's a shot that he's that white linebacker there seems to be one or two of every draft who was highly productive in college and gets drafted high-ish in forum mocks, but tumbles in real life. Scooby Wright and Tyler Matakevich are recent examples. I remember J Leman on the old board years ago...dude was going in the 2nd/3rd round. Undrafted IRL.
